1950s Janesville Apparel Union Made Fire Coat Size 44

1950年代 Janesville 帆布內襯防火服  尺寸44號

This is a canvas fireman’s coat from the 1950s in a wonderfully distressed vintage state. It has two stencils on the back—one that state’s the owner’s name, Billy Gallahan, and the other that reads Stafford V.F.D. On the inside of the coat, there are two additional markings, a handwritten W.I.G, likely for William I. Gallahan, and another handwritten mark that reads Dayamude.  It has a corduroy collar, a chin strap, suede cuffs, and heavy clasp fasteners. The coat has three layers. It has a heavy canvas exterior with a rubberized cotton lining. It also features a wool lining that can be snapped in and out. The coat has seen heavy use, so there are many light stains on the outside, but together they give the coat a beautiful vintage look. Some of the rubber on the inside of the cotton lining is peeling off (but not visible). There is one hole in the lining of the left cuff; there are also several small holes on the front of the coat, as pictured. It is marked a size 46, but probably fits closer to a size 42 or 44. I am 5’8” tall, 165 lbs, with a 39” chest, and it fits just a little bit large with the wool liner snapped in. Please consult photos and measurements for more details.
